the season that is. wednesday we have team photos after school. i believe coach wants a shirt and tie for the boys and skirts for the girls. then later that day the team is having a carbo loading dinner at sierra’s house.
thursday we will do some more carbo loading at ihop before the race. the league meet is at hart park and starts at noon.

CIF STATE CROSS COUNTRY CHAMPIONSHIPS TO REMAIN IN FRESNO THROUGH 2009
ALAMEDA – Woodward Park, in Fresno, will remain the home for the CIF State Cross Country Championships for another three years, the CIF Executive Committee has announced.
The new three-year agreement will run from 2007-2009. Woodward Park has been the site for the CIF State Cross Country Championships since the inception of the event in 1987.
“Woodward Park has been the home for the CIF State Cross Country Championships since the event began 20 years ago, and we are pleased that it will remain the site for the next three years,” said CIF Executive Director Marie M. Ishida. “Student-athletes, coaches, parents and fans associate the day after Thanksgiving with traveling to Fresno for the state championship meet.”
Annually, nearly 2,000 student-athletes from across the state compete in the CIF State Cross Country Championships. The championships feature a total of 10 races, five divisions of competition for both male and female athletes. All races are contested on a 5,000-meter course that features hard packed dirt trails with some grass and asphalt. It has mild ups and downs over rolling hills with one steep short hill.
“The CIF State Cross Country Championships give Fresno the opportunity to showcase itself as a premier sports destination,” said Roger Montero, Deputy Mayor of Fresno and Chairman of the FSC. “We are pleased to keep this event in our City.”
The 2006 CIF State Cross Country Championships will take place Saturday, November 25, 2006. The first race will begin at 8:30 am.

COLLEGE–2005: Nelson returned to action with an eighth-place finish (fourth for CU) at the Rocky Mountain Shootout. He improved to a sixth-place finish for the Buffs at Pre-Nationals (second for CU). Nelson moved back to CU’s fourth racer in the Big 12 Championships and finished ninth overall. He returned to his stellar form at the NCAA Mountain Regions where he bested All-American teammate Bret Schoolmeester by five-tenths of a second for the top honors in 30:28.2. Nelson finished his season as the fourth Buff to cross the line at the NCAA Championships. 2004: Redshirt. Did not compete. 2003: Nelson won his first collegiate contest when he took CU’s own Rocky Mountain Shootout in a Buffalo Ranch course pr 25:05 (18th all-time fastest 8k time). With Dathan Ritzenhein returning to the lineup at Pre-Nationals, Nelson would score as CU’s No. 2 runner the remainder of the season. He was the top sophomore at the Big 12 Championships when he finished third overall, and second to Ritzenhein on the CU ladder, when he covered the 8k Barton Creek Lakeside Golf Course in 24:34. After finishing 20th in the national qualifying as a freshman, he finished third, behind Ritz and BYU’s Kip Kangogo and earned his second All-American title with a career-best 16th place finish (just 39 ticks off the winning pace). 2002: Nelson was Wetmore’s “Diamond In The Rough” as a freshman. The Big 12 Newcomer of the Year, and CU’s No. 4 runner, had a pair of top-10 finishes at the Rocky Mountain Shootout and Big 12 Championships and finished 25th (top 10 percent) at the Pre-Nationals. As the top finishing freshman at the conference championships, he finished just one second behind CU senior All-American Steve Slattery, but turned around two weeks later to edge Slattery by two seconds to finish 20th (as the race’s top freshman) at regionals. He capped off his freshman campaign with a 42nd place finish at the NCAA Championships to earn All-American accolades. He went on to win the junior men’s 8k race at the U.S. Cross Country Championships in Houston before an American-best 26th-place finish at the World Championships in Lusianne, Switzerland. HIGH SCHOOL: Taft was the South Sequoia League cross country champions his sophomore through senior seasons. Nelson was an All-South Sequoia League performer his freshman through senior seasons and an All-Area pick his sophomore through senior year. His prep career culminated in his winning the Division 4 California State Championship as a senior. His senior year he finished third at the FootLocker Regional meet before a ninth-place finish at Nationals. Following the prep season he finished third, and earned a bid on the national team, at the U.S. Winter World Cross Country Championships decided in Vancouver, Wash. That March he finished 33rd (the second American) in the 8k men’s junior race at the World Championships in Dublin, Ireland. IN THE CLASSROOM: Nelson is a history major at Colorado and earned a spot on the Commissioner’s Honor Roll during the spring of ‘06. PERSONAL: William Andrew Nelson was born Sept. 11, 1984 in Bakersfield, Calif. He is the son of William and Amy Nelson and Rhonda and Bill Blythe of Bakersfield, Calif. He has an older sister Danielle, a 16-year-old brother, Colt, who competes in rodeo and a younger sister, Hailee.

they won the pac 10 meet this weekend over the 6 km (3.73 miles) stanford golf course. their average time was 20:28, which is 5:30 pace or 16:30 for 3 miles

if you missed The Colonel - Part 1.
i use to teach high school science (in watts in the 80s) so home schooling christopher would not be an issue but i really did not want to teach english too him. so i thought, bakersfield college has remedial english classes and i will put him in one of those. but first he needed to take the entrance exam.
so we went up to bc to take the test around halloween of his 6th grade year. the forum west and east were packed with future college students and one eleven year old. it was a funny sight but when he started taking the test, i could tell he was doing well. he ended up aceing it and now he could enroll in classes.
except there was a catch. he could only enroll in college level courses because he was under 18 and did not have a diploma. he was not allowed to take remedial courses so i enrolled him in two college level courses instead.
so spring semester of his sixth grade year, christopher went to college at night and grade school by day. i enrolled him in an anthropology class and a geology class. both classes were ITV classes, which are instructional tv courses. he still had to go to class for exams and reviews however.
so he watched the programs and did the homework quizzes and then it was time for the first midterms. they were both at forum west and there were at least a hundred people there. most were nervous and cramming for the exams.
prof. schiffman taught both classes and each test was a hundred questions each. i filled out christopher’s scantron and asked him how he thought he was going to do. and in his squeaky eleven year old voice, he said “nobody looks very smart, i should do real well”.
then a little after 6pm the anthro midterm began, at 6:15 christopher got up from his chair, walked down to the prof. and gave him his test. then we went outside to eat one of BC’s famous refried burritos and wait for the geology exam.
then schiffman came outside …

despite my size, i still run a lot (20 to 30 miles/week) but not very fast. for the past couple years i just walked a lot. i walked toads and the bakersfield half marathon in under 15 minutes per mile last year. but since christopher started running in june 2006, i decided to start running again. i am so slow, but by his senoir year i hope to run matt pace
i moved to bakersfield in 1976 and went to chipman. in the spring of my eigth grade year, i found out that the school had a track meet so i entered the mile. the day of the meet i found out that it was a qualifying meet for another race and the top two went to that meet. i also found out that who was already going had all but been decided (thats what they thought).
there was about ten in the race and i decided to follow the two who thought they were the team. in the end doug owens beat me but craig o’brien found out he was not going to the next meet. i think i ran sub 5:20.
the next stop was a shocker! the meet was at bakersfield college and every jr high was there. the place was packed. being new to bakersfield and running, i had no idea the race was going to be so big.
i remember the race had at least 15 runners and that everyone was fast. i got 5th or 6th and ran sub 5:10. the winners were below 5 minutes.
it ended up being my last race for awhile.

3200 - Boys
Though cross-country, at distances ranging up to two miles, had been a popular high school sport for decades, it was not until 1965 that the eight-lap race was added to the State Track & Field meet. In 1980 the distance was changed to 3200 meters.
