For those Kern County high school football players still haunted by visions of Ryan Mathews running roughshod through the secondary, Friday’s Terrio Therapy Blitz Bowl must have been a waking nightmare.

Bakersfield High’s (L to R) Jonah Cruz, Travis Rasmussen and Nektoe Demison were named The Californian’s co-Wrestlers of the Year.
When sophomore Jonah Cruz shocked Arcata’s Trent Stevenson, who was ranked No. 1 in the state at 135 pounds, the rest of the Bakersfield High wrestlers seemed to get energized.

When the best senior football players in Kern County hit the turf tonight for the Blitz Bowl, all eyes should be on the two positions with the most difficult transition to the arena game.
Quarterbacks have to find a way to time snap counts with receivers in motion toward the line of scrimmage, and kickers have to find a way to make field goals into a slightly narrower space.

Field Trip To The Wind Wolves Preserve
Date: Saturday, April 14, 2007
Time: 8:00 AM
Location: Orange Belt Adventures, 3640 N. Sillect Avenue
Price: $30.00
In April, the Kern County Historical Society will visit the largest privately owned nature preserve on the West Coast. The Wildlands Conservancy created the Wind Wolves Preserve after purchasing 93,000-acres in the southern San Joaquin Valley (including the historic San Emigdio Ranch). Recent acquisitions have expanded the preserve to more than 97,000 acres. The preserve is in an ecologically unique region where the Transverse and Coast Ranges, Sierra Nevada Mountains, western Mojave Desert, and San Joaquin Valley converge.
Participants will meet at Orange Belt Adventures at 8:00am. We will arrive at the Wind Wolves around 9:00am. The field trip will consist of a bus tour stopping at some of the breath-taking scenic and historic locations within the preserve. Sherryl Clendenen will give a presentation on the history of the Wind Wolves Preserve at the picnic area. We will have a box lunch catered by Western Kitchen at the picnic area. We will return to Bakersfield around 2:00pm.
Reservations due by April 6, 2007
Please observe the reservation deadline, and get your reservation in early. If you make your reservations by phone, please send your check for the full amount by the reservation deadline. Because of the time frame for ordering the food, we cannot honor late reservations.

One of the most exciting meets in track and field history is back. The West Coast Relays was brought back last year and the great performances of yesteryear continued. Forty schools
were represented totaling over 650 athletes. This year’s meet promises to be the same. On Saturday, March 31, 2007 at Clovis East High School the tradition of the West Coast Relays carries on. This meet is the largest meet in the central valley and will grow each year. Finishlynx timing will be used for all running events. Three levels of competition (invitational,
seeded and open) provide true excitement in all events. Awards in the invitational events will be a sweat shirt for first place and t-shirts for second and third. In the seeded and open events top three finishers receive a meet logo key chain.

How does your school stack up to others across the state? Each year, the California Department of Education ranks schools based on how students do on tests such as the California Standards Tests and the high school exit exam, among others. They rank schools on a scale from 1 to 10, with 10 being the best.
Links:
To see scores for the state as a whole:
To see scores for Kern County as a whole:
To see scores for a specific school district:
To see scores for a specific school:
Now’s your chance to see where your school stands.
The results show several things including:
* How your school compares with others statewide.
* How it compares with others with similar student demographics.
* Your school’s Base API (Academic Performance Index) score, which is a reflection of last school year’s test scores. The goal is for all schools to eventually score at least 800.
* Your school’s target API: the API score the state expects your school to reach this school year.
Ultimately, the idea behind all this is to show the state and federal governments whether schools are progressing fast enough toward one of the main goals of No Child Left Behind: that all students perform at grade level in math and reading by 2014.

Kern County high school all-league selections for winter sports season
Thank you for your patience during a very busy time during the seeding process. We had over 570 school registered, but we now appear set for a great meet. You will find school by school acceptance lists posted at www.dyestatcal.com along with an event key which corresponds to your entries.
Please keep in mind that with so many schools applying for this year’s meet, the cut-off points for qualifying were very strong.
Thanks so much for your participation in this year’s event. We look forwarding to hosting you at the 40th annual Arcadia Invitational next weekend.
Best regards,
