LA JOLLA — The Bakersfield College women’s track team qualified five athletes to the California state community college championships next weekend during the Southern California finals Saturday at UC San Diego.
The Renegades placed second with 62 points, matching the best finish at the SoCal finals in school history. The 1997 state championship team also placed second at the SoCal meet.
LaShay Bagsby placed third in the high jump with a 5-foot, 5-inch mark in the final event of the night that moved the Renegades past San Diego Mesa College into second place. Mount San Antonio (94) had clinched the title earlier in the day.
Bagsby qualified for the state meet in the high jump and in the javelin, where she also placed third (124-1).
Anikia Jackson, who had qualified for the state meet in March by winning the Southern California heptathlon, earned a spot in the javelin by placing fourth (117-2). She is also in contention in the 100 hurdles, where she was fifth in 15.52. That time will be compared to the Northern California fifth-place finisher to determine the final state qualifier in that event.
Also earning state meet berths for the BC women were Melissa Noonchester, who was third in the pole vault (10-7); Kamesha Bowens, who was second in the triple jump (39-1/2) and third in the long jump (17-11); and Shawna Rountree, who was third in the 1,500 meters (4:42.22).
The BC men qualified two individuals and a relay team to the state meet. Bert Wyatt placed fourth in the 110-meter high hurdles (15.54) and Tyrece Lee was third in the long jump (23-1). The 4×100 relay team earned a spot by placing fourth.
BC’s Adam Nesbitt had a strong eighth-place finish in the hammer (143-2) but did not earn a state meet berth.
