i drove out to the soccer park to cover the bc invite. i missed the college girls race but did see the college boys race. when i find results, i will post them.
it was nice to see many local athletes running for BC. i recognized former liberty, golden valley, west and mcfarland runners on the team. i am sure there were others that i missed.
the last race of the day was the open 5k, with a large number of high school teams running in it.
tesfa of west won with a clocking under 17 minutes followed by brant of centennial.
on the girls side, centennial took one two and ran under 20 minutes.
besides west and cenntenial: foothill, ridgeview, golden valley and liberty ran.
chris schwartz of foothill did not run. if i find results i will post them.
i think centennial won both the boys and girls races. ridgeview had a couple high finishers in the girls race too.
on the boys side, i tallied up the foothill vs liberty dual meet score and foothill beat liberty without schwartz and despite liberty going one two against foothill.

i asked for the high school results numerous times but never got them. HERE is a link to the college ones at least.

With the Stanford Invitational this weekend a couple of questions could begin to be cleared up. 1) Are there any challengers emerging to challenge Saugus and 2) what other team will step up to join the long jam of teams behind the Centurions?

1 Ventura (Ventura, CA) - In continuing to take a conservative approach (as it has done successfully in recent years) during the early season, the Cougars rested out a few top runners while placing second to bubble team Cabrillo at the Blue Lagoon Invitational. Ventura had a pair of runners place among the strong front-running crew of Cabrillo, with a bit of extrapolation from other team members in previous races giving insight that the Cougars definitely appear strong yet again.

The Life of the Chinese Gold Farmer
By JULIAN DIBBELL
It was an hour before midnight, three hours into the night shift with nine more to go. At his workstation in a small, fluorescent-lighted office space in Nanjing, China, Li Qiwen sat shirtless and chain-smoking, gazing purposefully at the online computer game in front of him. The screen showed a lightly wooded mountain terrain, studded with castle ruins and grazing deer, in which warrior monks milled about. Li, or rather his staff-wielding wizard character, had been slaying the enemy monks since 8 p.m., mouse-clicking on one corpse after another, each time gathering a few dozen virtual coins — and maybe a magic weapon or two — into an increasingly laden backpack.

Mac Fleet (University City, San Diego)
How did training go over the summer and fall so far?
MF - It has been really good. Actually this last week has been really bad, my legs have been really tired and cramping up, but the week before that I had a really good week. I ran a 56 minute ten miler and two days before that a 46 minute eight miler, and that was really reassuring for coming up here. I ran close to 700 miles over the summer, keeping the high 50’s normally (miles
per week), and I went over 60 a couple of times.

Christine Babcock (Woodbridge, Irvine)
What did you do for workouts this week?
CB - Monday we ran an eight mile hill loop at El Moro. Tuesday we did 12 400’s. Wednesday we did a five mile recovery run. Thursday was a four mile tempo run. Friday was an easy day, like pre-meet day.
What did you run the 400 repeats on Tuesday in?
CB - All under 70, but we were in a grass field.

Steve Chavez (Murrieta Valley)
1) Without going into a whole lot of detail describe the summer training program you go through with your team and is phases (again, very briefly if you could).
SC - Over the summer we expect the returning kids to come in with a good mileage base (averaging up to 40mpw coming in) so that we can get right to some serious training. Our varsity squads get quickly to 4×2 mile threshold workouts (3 min rest) on Mondays. This summer we did a 4-mile cut down run every Thursday; however, the big thing over the past two years has been emphasizing pace of training everyday. I want my varsity boys doing everything at 6:30 pace or better and the varsity girls at 7:30 or better. This has significantly helped our improvement. Boys average 50-70 mpw over the summer and girls 40-60 mpw.

it was a long day but a good day. we left around 8am and headed north to stanford. our crew is pretty tight now because every saturday we spend hours together in the van.
we got to the meet around 1pm and tried to figure out the course. steve ended up running the course behind one of the races and was able to geve the team a good idea of what to look out for. i also found where i could get photos and splits.
the start was super fast with ariey going out in 5:15 for the first mile and the rest were under 5:50.
ariey hit the 2 mile in 11:07, followed by david and edquist in 11:20 and zack and mccarthy in around 11:40. john and chris went by in around 12 minutes.
the last 600 meters of this 5000 meter course was slightly uphill and kind of took the team by surprise.
their 3 mile splits were ariey 17:00, david 17:15, edquist 17:27, zack and mccarthy 17:57. john 18:15 and chris 18:21.
here are their final results:

so come and support your drillers on wednesday. you can also get to see foothill’s chris schwartz in action.
