Lina Nuñez impreved by more than a minute over her 2006 time.

BREA, Calif. – The CSUB women’s cross country team finally put aside its two–a–day preseason training regimen and opened its 2007 season with a 12th–place finish in the Fullerton Season Opener Saturday at Carbon Canyon Park in Brea.

“This was a good marker for us and gives us a baseline to work from,” said Maija Rhode, who served her first meet as the CSUB head coach Saturday. “We’ve only been working for two and a half weeks and we’ve been piling on the distance, so we went into this meet to get a feel for where we are and where this early in the season.”

Christa McCann led the Roadrunner contingent by placing 73rd overall in 20:42.80. Lina Nuñez (21:08.80, 94th) was the next CSUB finisher but possibly the best performance of the day came from Lauren Nolasco, whose time of 21:27.80 was more than a full minute better than her previous best on the course of 22:53.1.

“I was happy with the improvement of several of our runners, but Lauren’s improvement from last season to this season was very impressive,” said Rhode.

In the team standings, host Cal State Fullerton took the team title with 51 points. Cal State L.A. placed second with 78 points. CSUB finished 12th with 348 points.

Individually, Karla Alburez of Cal State L.A. took top honors in an impressive time of 17:43.50. She beat runner Jaime Canterbury of Azusa Pacific more than 27 seconds.

CSUB returns to action next Saturday at the UC Irvine Invitational.
