North High had a 1-2 punch that was unbeatable at Saturday’s first-ever high school cross country meet at The Park at River Walk.
Senior Cody Gragg and junior Candace Carlson both easily won their respective 5-kilometer varsity races at the Wolf Pack Invitational.
Gragg clocked 16 minutes, 18 seconds and crossed the finish line about 75 yards ahead of runner-up Oscar Fuentes from East, who had a 16:45.
“You’ve got to give yourself a goal,” Gragg said about staying motivated in a race despite a comfortable lead. “Maybe put together your best time.”
Gragg said he thought he’d easily win Saturday’s race. The only race he hasn’t won this season was the Sanger Invitational, when Foothill’s Chris Schwartz beat him by five seconds. Gragg also has a win over Schwartz, at the McLane Invitational. Foothill did not compete in Saturday’s race.
Gragg said he is looking forward to later this season when he’ll compete against some of the top Central Section runners from north of Kern County.
“Madera, Clovis, Buchanan –those teams are very good,” he said.
Carlson sprinted out to the lead from the start.
“I go out really hard,” Carlson said. “If I have it in my mind, I’ll stay in front.”
She steadily pulled away and dominated her competition, winning in 19:09. Delano senior Brianna Diaz was second (19:39) and Stockdale’s Ashley Nolasco was third (20:11).
Carlson, arguably considered the top girls cross country runner in the Bakersfield area this fall, has now won all four races she’s competed in this season.
It’s been a good week for her. Carlson set a North High course record on Wednesday during a dual meet against West.
“I feel that I’m doing good now,” said Carlson, who also placed first at the Kern and Sanger invitationals.
Delano’s Diaz, who said she is competing in cross country for the first time this season, was a runner-up for the second time in less than 24 hours. She was second Friday at the Golden Eagle Invitational at Woodward Park in Fresno.
Diaz did not appear overly fatigued at the end of the race despite competing in back-to-back days. She said it was the first time she’s competed against Carlson and said she didn’t know too much about the North runner.
“I don’t know if I would’ve beaten her, but I know I’d have been closer,” Diaz said when asked to predict her finish if she didn’t compete Friday.
Palmdale was the boys team champion with 59 points. All five Falcons’ runners placed in the top 17, including two in the top eight. East (72) and Ridgeview (92) finished second and third, respectively.
The girls team champion was Stockdale, which had 44 points and its top five finishers in the top 15. Ridgeview (70) and Palmdale (89) followed.
