Celebrating our 60th Anniversary, the Mt. SAC Cross Country Invitational has become our nation’s largest cross country invitational. Last year a record 20,000+ participants competed over our famed 3 mile cross country course. The names “Valley Loop”, “Switchbacks”, “Poop Out Hill” and “Reservoir Hill” have become part of cross country legend and lingo. The course has changed little over the last 60 years, making it one of the few courses where different generations can compare times.
With races starting every 8 minutes or less (except the Sweepstakes Races) along with the famous Mark Guitierrez designed t-shirts, live webcast/feed and the huge “Big Screen”, the event has become the most cherished cross country competiiton to the hundreds of thousands of runners who have competed in the invitational.

On behalf of all of us here at Mt. SAC, thank you for taking part in this year’s Cross Country Invitational. We are grateful for your participation and look forward to running a great meet for you.
As you can well imagine with any endeavor of this size there will be little bumps in the road from time to time. We believe there is not a problem we cannot solve if given enough time to come up with a solution. Toward that end, if you find a problem when you arrive please come to the “problem solving” tent immediatly. It is located near the finish chute exit. Someone is always there to assist you. Questions can be answered at the “awards and information” tent in front of the field house.
Other things to remember and / or tell your team, parents and staff:
- Athletes must be “in uniform” to be admitted through the gate. Holding a jersey in their hand and waving it at us is not “in uniform”.
- Bring your water jugs empty to the meet. We have a “fill station” located on the east side of our field house. Don’t make those skinny little freshman kids carry that big jug of water across the parking lot. Let us fill it for you and then PLEASE make sure your athletes DRINK WATER prior to the event, during the event and after the event.
- We charge for parking because we pay people to make your experience easier in the lot. We now have bus lanes and a “system” that will make everyone’s life easy IF followed. PLEASE follow the directions of our parking lot people…PLEASE demand your bus drivers do as well. School busses and marked school vans are free. All others pay. (Even the mini van full of athletes in uniform will have to pay.) Sorry no exceptions can be made to that.
- MEDICAL ISSUES – We have trainers on site, we have an advanced life support ambulance on site staffed by two paramedics, we have course spotters throughout the course watching for any signs of trouble. All of those people are there watching for and ready to react to the serious, life threatening emergency. They will assist with a scrapped knee or the occasional case of road rash but they have very clear instructions not to get bogged down with the “minor” injuries. They have to be ready and able to respond if needed and for this reason we will triage cases as presented to us. Do not think us heartless if we send the minor injury back to you for repair. Most of the meets you take part in have very little in terms of medical help available. While we have substantial assistance on hand it is there to respond quickly and effectively in case of a dire situation. If, in the judgement of our medical personal, their ability to respond quickly is being hampered they will refuse treatment and refer runners back to their coach for minor issues. We appreciate your understanding and cooperation.
- If you have the ability to communicate with parents who will be attending the event please remind them of the following:
- Everyone enters and exits the meet through the front part of the stadium. We have to do this because there is no other way to enter or leave without cutting across the race course. That is too difficult to manage, so for everyone’s sake, runners, parents, spectators, all will enter via the front of the stadium and not down the “road” to the start line.
- There is only one way to get from the warm-up field to the valley loop and that is through the “cross walk”. The cross walk is impacted with people, it takes time…be patient and follow the directions of the sheriff’s deputies that are working that area.
- Our course marshals are out there to help the runners…a parents desire for a “good” picture can’t take precedence over the need to give all runners the opportunity to compete without interference. Please ask them to obey the kind hearted volunteers in the orange vests. They don’t deserve abuse.
Thanks again for taking part in the 60th running of the Reebok/Mt. SAC Cross Country Invitational!
We are looking forward to a great meet.
See you Friday or Saturday,
Doug Todd
Mt. SAC Special Events Director
