what a nice day for a cross country meet. it was cool and cloudy and the racing was hot. i have not found the complete results (i will post them when i get them). but i do know that mcfarland won the varsity and frosh/soph boys team races. the girls varsity team race was close and i dont know who won.
chris schwartz (foothill) and candace carlson (north) ran away with the individual titles. i spoke to chris a bit and he was please with his race but just missed breaking 15 minutes. he also told me that someone stole his batman cape that he wore at mt sac. he is looking forward to next weekend’s chess tournament (he won a trophy last year) too.
i look forward to him winning a state title. speaking of state titles, i think mcfarland will be getting one this year. they got amazing depth, great coaches and are fierce competitors. it has been a pleasure to be able watch them and chris run this year at many meets.
on thursday, we return for the league meets. the seyl races should be good ones. the highland boys are undefeated and there is a three way tie for second (foothill, bakersfield and liberty). the battle for second behind chris in the individual race should be good too.
on the girls side, foothill is undefeated and bakersfield’s only lost was to foothill. so if bakersfield wins the league meet. then foothill and bakersfield will be co-champs. the individual girls race should be between foothil and bakersfield too.

North’s Carlson, Foothill’s Schwartz claim cross country titles

North High’s Candace Carlson and Foothill’s Chris Schwartz upheld their status Saturday as the county’s top cross country runners by cruising to easy victories at the Kern County Invitational.
Carlson clocked 18 minutes, nine seconds over the 3-mile course at Hart Park. And she was strong at the end, completing the race by sprinting across the finish line.
“I’m pretty happy with that time,” said Carlson, a junior. “I like this race. It’s got a lot of different heights. It’s not just flat.”
Schwartz had an even more dominant performance, clocking 15:03 over the same course and also running hard at the finish as he tried to each his goal of breaking 15 minutes.
When he saw he was a few seconds short of that goal as he reached the finish line, his shoulders sagged and he gave a quick glance over his right shoulder with a frustrated look on his face.
“This was my best time (for a 3-mile course), but I really wanted to break 15,” he said, adding that his previous best for that distance was 15:18.
“I’ve improved a lot. I’ve been pushing and listening a lot to my coaches.”
Schwartz was so far ahead of the competition early in the race that he never gave other runners a thought.
McFarland, which won the boys team title, had four runners in the top six and six in the top nine, including runner-up Alfonso Cisneros. But Sisneros was more than 30 seconds slower than Schwartz, clocking 15:39.
Carlson faced a mid-race challenge from Delano’s Brianna Diaz and Shafter’s Elizabeth Wittenberg, who wound up second and third, respectively.
At the 1-mile mark, Carlson was about 20 yards ahead of Diaz and Wittenberg. But the gap closed during a hilly portion of the race.
“When I got on a big hill, I felt them getting closer,” Carlson said. “Between the mile and mile-and-a-half mark, I heard footsteps.
McFarland, which has won nine state team titles, scored 23 points in a dominating performance. Highland was second with 81.
McFarland coach Amador Ayon said he sees similarities between this year’s team and the last state championship team, from 2001.
“This is a highly committed group,” said Ayon, who added that the Cougars are ranked No. 1 in the state for Division IV teams. “We’re really focused on our ultimate goal, which is to finish No. 1 in the state.”
Depth set McFarland apart on Saturday.
“We wanted to show that we were the best team in Kern County,” Ayon said. “Our goal is a 10-second gap between our first runner and our fifth runner. It was 14 seconds today.”
Stockdale, despite the absence of No. 1 runner Ashley Nolasco, won the girls team title with 60 points. Centennial was second with 71.
“Our girls stepped up big-time,” said Stockdale coach Bree Tape. “They just ran great.”
Nolasco, who ranks as one of the county’s top runners, has tendinitis in her left knee and was instructed by her doctor on Friday to skip this race. She said she plans on running Thursday at the Southwest Yosemite League meet, which will also be held at Hart Park.
“I was really upset last night,” Nolasco said of her reaction when it was decided she wouldn’t compete Saturday. “I want to make sure I’m running at league and valley, when it really counts.”
