on friday it rained and on saturday it was cold. the rain didnt bother the distance guys much but the sprinters dont like the cold.
more details and videos are HERE
we got there around 10am and everyone broke out their blankets and put on all clothes they could find.
at 11am, gabe and jimmy tried out the high jump. i think the 2 hour van ride and the cold hampered their performance. i tried to watch them jump and attempted to take pictures but i was stuck in a coach’s meeting drawing for lane assignments while they were jumping.
then the 4×100s came up and the theme of the day began. edison took first and we took second in the boy’s races.
we fielded two very competitive teams in the 4×100 and 4×400 and looked pretty good despite the fact it was the first time we were on a real track with exchange lines not scrapped into the dirt.
the 8×200 was a fun event to watch and show our depeth real well.

lastly, i wanted to praise kelsey for her gutting performance in her first track meet in her life. she has never run over more than two hurdles in practice and in the 300 hurdles she didnt clear the second one and did a head first slide on to the track.
then she got right up and ran down the buchanan girl and ended up getting 5th out of ten girls entered. it was a gutsy performance.
she also ran the second leg of the 400 in 68 seconds. to be my dotw.
the day ended on a good note. our “A” 4 x 400 was saved by a great anchor leg by jerek johnson and we got third and the last medal. also our “B”
won there heat with a great anchor leg by walter hunt who chased down edision’s runner.
i believe all of our boy’s got at least one medal at the meet and the girl’s got some good experience under their belts.
next up for the drillers is the eb invite, where last year we won the frosh/soph boys and girls team competition. if we had scored 3 more points, we would of won the sweepstakes trophy too.

almost midnight and in 8 hours i get to go back to buchanan for the clovis sprint carnival. the distance carnival was a blast today and the rain made it memorable.
buchanan’s new mondo track is SWEET and so was the meet.
we left bhs a little after 11am and got back after 8pm. in between, we ate andrew’s birthday snacks, got real wet and ran some good times.
our friends from highland, golden valley, mcfarland, north and centennial were there too. hope i didnt forget anyone else.
i have posted videos HERE and photos HERE. they arent the best but my little cameras did the best they could. i need to get back into track mode and figure out how to shoot with two cameras and keep track of splits and stuff. basically i need more hands.
HERE is a link to driller results
 complete results HERE
plus remember you can leave comments on this blog. tell us about your BDC experience. also leave comments on the photos. tell us who you are.
lastly, please support my site sponsors!
thought i would add some to this blog. it is 4am sunday morning and i am wideawake because of my neighbors barking dog.
i got the final results linked and they are surprising almost complete. those buchanan girls did a good job trying to keep everything dry and not blown away.
the only results that got destroyed were the 3200 results. if you check out my photos you can get some of the times for the top boy runners however. i took photos with the big old clock and the athlete finishing. click HERE for photos. comment on those suckers too. tell me who, what, where and why.

in the girl’s 1600, north highs candace carlson had the second fastest time of the day. she also came in 3rd in the 3200 but the times for the girl’s and boy’s 3200 were destroyed by the weather.

A “real” Bakersfield High student
By: Jairus Vasquez
Topics: reality, perspective, Bakersfield High School
Posted by Jairusc123 Mon Jan 28, 2008 16:59:09 PST
Every weekday, as I attend my classes at Bakersfield High School, I’m surrounded by teachers that go beyond their job description; providing influential political insight or simply how to be successful in life. I’m also surrounded by peers who have been unrecognized in their innumerable achievements. However, the few times I get the chance to see publicity (outside of sports) of my school, its disappointment that I feel.
Sometimes, I’m simply “fed up” with the lack of maturity I see on campus. With regards to the events on Jan. 25. (campus brawl). Our society has come to capitalize on the enjoyment of these malicious acts that only furthers the issue. That’s not to say the media is wrong in simply reporting the news for the awareness of safety for the public, instead I’m criticizing the student body that allowed this to happen. There’s no hiding that fights occur, but my personal accounts have shown that most of these usually happen moments before classes are released or in the halls during class. If actions are any indication of priorities, then it’s very easy to see how those involved in a fight such as last Friday, or even the instigation of gawking by-standers view their personal role at a high school institution.
I have yet to see any one of my peers that share my English or Political Science class involved in something as degrading to themselves or the school’s reputation. Bakersfield High has a rich history of “pride” and “success”, and it’s sickening to see the selfish acts of immaturity that contradict but even overshadow most positive attributes. There have been moments where I have spotted news cameras on campus taking polls and opinions from students, and not once have I seen or heard of a student from the AP, Honors, or GATE curriculum giving their response. It’s always been a misinformed dramatized interview by a student that should be getting to class, learning to be a productive citizen, rather than asking the camera man to be interviewed.
These people that act upon impulsive selfish desires (fighting out of anger, getting on the news for the sake of it) would be much better off getting to the classrooms and avoiding the horrendous events such as last Friday, or giving the media a shallow misinterpreted response. I can’t help but think that it will be these people’s children that I will be paying for to eat in ten years. Sadly, because we don’t live in a perfect world this may never happen and we all just have to rely on whatever greater power that life will set the balance. In the meantime the best we can do is make the best of ourselves.
