Coach Allan Smart says: “He’s on a roll right now, running really good and peaking at the right time. That’s exactly what you want to see in track at this point in time.”

so sad …

before the frosh/soph meet, there was a coaches meeting. there was a vote on the whether to have 18 qualifiers or 16 for the south area meet. now this meeting should have been held sooner and shouldnt have been held right before a seven hour plus track meet.

there wouldnt be a need for the vote, if the liberty track had been built correctly in the beginning. someone (not a track person) though it would be a good idea to put a fence right next to lane nine. this was a dangerous situation that shouldnt of ever happen in the first place.

then last year, the track was resurfaced and instead of moving or removing (or using portable fences) the fence. some genius decided to make it an eight lane track. sheer brilliance.

so now all the coaches are given about a minute to decide the fate of the south area meet. the only reason to drop down to 16 was to save time. sadly, some coaches were heard to say that they didnt want to sit through the extra heats.

we could of done what they are doing for valley. three heats, top 8 in one and two heats of 5 (wont need to do this if liberty was a nine lane track). but instead of letting athletes get one last chance to compete, the majority decided they wanted to go home earlier.

an athlete may have been training all four years for a chance to compete at the area meet but wont get the chance now.

SO SAD!

Ragans dominates Foothill Invitational with season-best 63-73/4 in shot put and 193-0 in discus

Last Updated: Friday, Apr 25 2008 11:49 PM

Frontier sophomore Matt Darr took his gray towel and briskly dusted the discus throwing circle at Friday’s Foothill Invitational Track and Field Meet.

Foothill High’s Dayshan Ragans puts the shot put Friday at the Foothill Track and Field Invitational. He won the event with a mark of 63-foot, 7-3/4-inch.
But it was Foothill’s Dayshan Ragans that swept away the competition, winning both the discus and shot put by beating out Darr and Bakersfield’s Collin Ellis.

Ragans won the shot with a season best mark of 63 feet, 73/4 inches before easily outdistancing his two biggest rivals and everyone else in the discus with a throw of 193-0.

“I felt like it was an excellent day in the shot,” Ragan said. “I came out there. I was ready to go. I had some big spin, big half turns, big warm-ups. Then I got in there and ended up throwing a 63. I expected to throw a 65 today but I guess things happen.”

Ragans topped his previous season best by three inches.

Darr finished second in the event with a personal best 53-1. His previous best was 50-5.

But it may have came with a price, as Darr finished third in the discus (156-8), well short of his season-best 180-5.

“I had a really good day in the shot put and I think it took a lot out of me and affected me in the discus,” Darr said.

Ellis set personal bests in both events. He finished second in the discus (167-5), topping his previous best by half an inch. He was third in the shot with a personal best 50-9.

Ragans fouled on his attempt in the discus before rebounding to finish with a throw about five feet shy of his personal best of 197-11.

“The discus was going kind of sloppy in the beginning,” Ragans said. “My first two throws were not so great…And then my third throw went over 180. On my last throw I wasn’t really doing technique. I was just trying to go for it and give it my all.”

Darr and Ellis give Ragans a reason to continue to give it his all.

“Me and the guys get along real good, Ragan said. “We push each other even though our marks are apart from each other. We still push each other. We still make other try to throw farther.”

Darr finds the strong competition beneficial too.

“It’s great,” Darr said. “Last year I was so overwhelmed. I through against Dayshan a few times and it was awesome to be in the same ring as him. Of course Collin Ellis is an excellent thrower too and we’ve always battled out.”

With cameras clicking and people cheering Tuesday in North High’s cafeteria, distance runner Cody Gragg stole one glance away from the dotted line.

“It was hard to not focus on the camera and focus on the paper,” Gragg said. “Pretend it’s not there. The nerves were coming.”

What’s even harder, Gragg said, is becoming an accomplished distance runner in just three years. That’s what he’s done, going out for track his freshman year only because he was struggling in baseball, and then for cross country the next fall because he wasn’t already on the football team.

“I was going to play football my freshman year, but I pulled my groin, so I didn’t do anything,” Gragg said. “… I went out for track, gave it a shot, and it kind of skyrocketed from there.”

He’s become one of Bakersfield’s premier runners, taking 11th in the Central Section meet with a time of 16:00 and qualifying for the state meet. He also owns a top-10 time among section runners in the 3,200 meters and a top-20 time in the 1,600.

“Darrin Sundgren and Bill Lind, our distance coaches, have worked really hard with him,” said Allan Smart, North’s head track and field coach. “(Gragg) was the diamond in the rough.”

Gragg, who chose Fresno State over Long Beach State and some smaller schools, said the ride has made him thankful for that injured groin.

“I sure like the way things played out,” Gragg said.

He was also happy for all of Tuesday’s hullabaloo — if not entirely comfortable with it.

“It takes a lot of pressure off my shoulders,” Gragg said. “… It’s a little (uncomfortable), but I’m glad they all came out. I’d rather everybody be here than nobody be here.”

Another week, another personal record for Shafter’s Anna Jelmini.

Shafter High’s Anna Jelmini broke the Central Section record in the discus Saturday.
Now she can call herself the best discus thrower the Central Section has ever seen.

Jelmini threw a 183-11 in the discus at the Bill Kearney Invitational in Salinas on Saturday, breaking the old section mark of 178-0 by Bakersfield High’s Rachel Varner in 2002, by nearly six feet.

Perhaps more impressively, the mark equaled the fourth-best high school throw ever in the U.S.

“There were great conditions here, and she really performed well,” Shafter throwing coach Matt Godbehere said. “Three of her six throws were over 180 feet. … She actually threw 183-11 twice.”

Track statistician Ron Blackwood also said Jelmini’s mark was a state junior-class record and was tied for second in the state for all classes. Suzy Powell of Modesto-Downey threw 188-4 in 1994 and Leslie Deniz of Gridley also had a 183-11 in 1980. The previous junior-class record was 180-8 by Powell in 1993.

Jelmini, whose previous PR was 175-8, also won the shot put Saturday with a throw of 44-6.5.

Frontier’s Matt Darr won the boys discus with a PR of 180-5.5.

it ran through the orange orchards and was mainly downhill out and uphill coming back. interestingly there was 4 or 5 cattle fences and they were all locked so one had to climb over them.

also there were a couple more creek crossing too. the creek crossing had planks across them but often everyone ran through them.

lastly, there were cows on the course and sometimes they wouldnt move or they ran along in front of you. with cows came their cow patties too.

in the old days, a lot of runners broke 60 on the course too. on the out and back course one had to climb over 8 fences and cross the creek 6 times.
