a reader wrote me today and was wondering what the course record was on the course. from the btc website, former driller joel cardoza ran 15:41 in 2006. i seem to remember that this time maybe suspect however.
the reader also inquired about the age of the race. he thought it was a new race but it has been around for awhile. i think it got started in the late 80s and i definitely ran it in the early 90s.
in fact, ten or more years ago it was the last race that i ran for the most part. i won the overall point series and it was my last race i seriously ran. in 2006, my son christopher won the series and it was the first race he ever won.
the btc summer series started out as the darryl easter memorial handicap series. darryl easter died at a young age and left behind several young children and a wife. i ran with darryl and he put on some local races back in the 80s too.
my earliest memories of this series was that it was run in winter and was held on sunday afternoons. the race also started up the road a bit. the finish was uphill near the tunnel where the bike path leads to now.
the bike path didnt exist back then either. the race was up what was called rattlesnake gulch and then back down. it was all uphill and then downhill. the turnaround was almost to the road at the top of the hill. the road the race was on wasnt much of a road.
it was dirt with a lot of rocks and ruts. watching ones footing was key and many an ankle was turned on the old course. it was a pure strength runner’s course back in the day.
later the race moved to tuesday nights and the start was moved too. i still believe it is the hardest 5k course around.

another big crowd showed up for the second of six races in the btc summer series. tonight, i had a negative 8 minute handicap so i figured i could run and shoot pictures. basically i would run till i saw someone to shoot and then i would run/jog again. some of the photos are pretty bad but hopefully mr. ralls got some better ones.
i ended up in the top ten, so i was able to watch most of the runners come in. i think johnathan wykoff won and probably blew his handicap tonight. brian solis (ridgeview) and ryan lucker (csub) ran well and beat there previous efforts and lina (csub) blew by me like i was standing still with a half mile to go.
ridgeview had a good size group at the race and csub was well represented too. quite a few drillers made it out as well. all and all a good run.
btw the gal pictured is renee (a 2008 graduate of csub).

i walk a lot on the bike path and most of the runners i see are women and i noticed that in the past two long distance races that there were more women competing then men.
at the rio bravo ten miler there were 41 women to 34 men. at the kern trail 15 miler there were 13 women to 11 men and a women won overall.
in the kern trail ten miler, the men were 59 to the women’s 57.

i ran the rio bravo 10 miler when i was in high school (early 80s) and it used to be an out and back course that started at the picnic grounds behind the kern river golf course.
it ran through the orange orchards and was mainly downhill out and uphill coming back. interestingly there was 4 or 5 cattle fences and they were all locked so one had to climb over them.
also there were a couple more creek crossing too. the creek crossing had planks across them but often everyone ran through them.
lastly, there were cows on the course and sometimes they wouldnt move or they ran along in front of you. with cows came their cow patties too.
in the old days, a lot of runners broke 60 on the course too. on the out and back course one had to climb over 8 fences and cross the creek 6 times.

we live downtown, a block or two from the bike path so we mainly train on the bike path where the only hils are the ones that go under the bridges.
during the off-season, christopher and i go up to the panorama bluffs and run but he hasnt run there in ages. so the kern river trail run was going to be a challenge.
for christopher, going down the trails is slower than going up them for the most part.
anyways, christopher usually wears a garmin gps watch when he runs and so i got some good elevation stats for the fifteen miler.
the race starts behind lake ming and the course is slightly downhill till the first hill at the 5.5 mile point. at this point christopher and the second place finisher in the race were in the lead with the overall winner a minute or so behind.
then the hills began and here are the elavation gains:
5.5 to 5.7 miles - 450 ft to 850 ft
5.7 to 7 miles - 850 ft to 650 ft
7 to 7.8 miles - 650 ft to 900 ft
the lead woman takes the overall lead.
7.8 to 9.1 miles - 900 ft to 600 ft
9.1 to 9.9 miles - 600 ft to 1000 ft
9.9 to 12 miles - 1000 ft to 500ft
and then it was flat to the finish. our watched measured the course at 15.13 miles.
