the driller’s isiah griggs is the #2 sophomore in the state as of 05/21/08. he came in second at the valley with a PR of 6′6 and has qualified for the state meet.
what makes his jump even more amazing is that bhs doesnt even have proper high jump facilities. our high jump gear is locked away in a storage bin and when we do bring it out, there isnt a proper place to set it out.
despite this, isiah (with the help of csub’s alex haver) contiunes to improve. one hopes he can make 6′8 at state.

Elias Gedyon ran a 1:52.2 to help loyola win the 4 x 800 event. this is the first time i have seen this young man (he is a freshaman) and i was quite impressed. he ran a smart race and held off a final challenge. he is just a second away from the national freshman record.
later in the evening his team took second in the 4 x mile and he ran 4:25.
not bad considering it was his first outdoor meet of the year.

Kern throwers best in state

If early results are any indication, it’ll be quite a year for the Bakersfield area at this year’s state track and field meet May 30-31 at Cerritos College in Norwalk.
Foothill’s Dayshan Ragans, Shafter’s Anna Jelmini and Stockdale’s Alex Collatz lead an impressive group of Kern County track and field stars making an appearance in the latest Dyestat.com state rankings.
Ragans has the best discus throw in California this season by more than 14 feet, with his 197-5 easily better than the second-place mark of 183-2 from Orange-Lutheran’s Blake Ayles. Ragans also has the top shot put throw in the state with a 63-4.75.
On the girls side, Kern throwers are even more dominant. Jelmini has the best shot put mark at 45-6.5 and the best discus mark at 172-8. Collatz is second in the discus at 159-4. The next closest? Kendall Morris of Beyer with a 143-9.
Only one other county girls mark reaches the state’s top 10 (Cesar Chavez’s 800 relay team is seventh in the state with a 1:49.42), but several other boys make the rankings.
Others in the top 10 are: North’s Anthony Mitchell (eighth in the 800 at 1:56.00), Foothill’s Chris Schwartz (seventh in the 3200 at 9:19.59), Ridgeview’s Chris Kelly (fourth in the triple jump at 46-3.5 and ninth in the long jump at 22-0.5) and Liberty’s 1600 relay team (seventh at 3:37.42).
