the first hill

during the off-season, christopher and i go up to the panorama bluffs and run but he hasnt run there in ages. so the kern river trail run was going to be a challenge.

for christopher, going down the trails is slower than going up them for the most part.

anyways, christopher usually wears a garmin gps watch when he runs and so i got some good elevation stats for the fifteen miler.

the race starts behind lake ming and the course is slightly downhill till the first hill at the 5.5 mile point. at this point christopher and the second place finisher in the race were in the lead with the overall winner a minute or so behind.

then the hills began and here are the elavation gains:

5.5 to 5.7 miles - 450 ft to 850 ft
5.7 to 7 miles - 850 ft to 650 ft
7 to 7.8 miles - 650 ft to 900 ft

the lead woman takes the overall lead.

7.8 to 9.1 miles - 900 ft to 600 ft
9.1 to 9.9 miles - 600 ft to 1000 ft
9.9 to 12 miles - 1000 ft to 500ft

and then it was flat to the finish. our watched measured the course at 15.13 miles.

A bank of clouds was assembling on the not-so-distant horizon, but journalist-mountaineer Jon Krakauer, standing on the summit of Mt. Everest, saw nothing that “suggested that a murderous storm was bearing down.” He was wrong. The storm, which claimed five lives and left countless more–including Krakauer’s–in guilt-ridden disarray, would also provide the impetus for Into Thin Air, Krakauer’s epic account of the May 1996 disaster. nike has a great meeting building in culver city. it is like an art gallery. the front lobby is huge and this time it was full of baseball memorbillia. last time it had running stuff.

first off, nike serves us some finger food and refreshments and we get to mingle. in this room, we also get to checkout their new shoes, uniforms and other accessories.

then we went to the screening room and they told us about their new shoes and other products. i like that they admit that they lost their focus on running and that now they are really trying to reconnect with the running community.

all their new shoes looked great and so did the watches and the sunglasses. they even gave us one of the triax watches. we can also buy some as a team and get a really good deal on them.

i gave coach the watch nike gave me. so now he has a stopwatch.

nike also told us about their national championship which sounds really cool.

This is The Other Bakersfield Sound.

The Filthies, a local punk band, are, from left, bassist Kelley Ratliff, vocalist and guitarist Kenny Mount, and drummer Eric “Guppy” Bonilla.
Instead of twangy Telecasters, silky pedal steel guitars and a country beat, The Other Bakersfield Sound is rude, aggressive, distorted and anything but country.
