The Life of the Chinese Gold Farmer
By JULIAN DIBBELL
It was an hour before midnight, three hours into the night shift with nine more to go. At his workstation in a small, fluorescent-lighted office space in Nanjing, China, Li Qiwen sat shirtless and chain-smoking, gazing purposefully at the online computer game in front of him. The screen showed a lightly wooded mountain terrain, studded with castle ruins and grazing deer, in which warrior monks milled about. Staff, wire reports
Bakersfield High has tabbed a new head coach to take over one of the most successful girls soccer programs in Central Section history.
Brian Walker, a former Driller, will take over for Leslie O’Connor, who left the position to move into administration with the Kern High School District. O’Connor guided the program to seven Central Section championships. His squad reached the Division I final last season.
Walker graduated from BHS in 1995 after earning all-league and All-Area honors in soccer and as a kicker in footbal. Walker competed at Bakersfield College and Cal State Bakersfield. He began teaching at BHS in 2000 and has served as an assistant on the boys soccer and baseball teams.
O’Connor had coached soccer at BHS since 1992, after playing at Cal State Bakersfield. He coached the girls program to a 306-28-40 record. O’Connor was named The Californian’s Coach of the Year five times and state coach of the year twice.
