The Bakersfield Track Club Summer Series 2008 #2
Originally uploaded by andynoise

another big crowd showed up for the second of six races in the btc summer series. tonight, i had a negative 8 minute handicap so i figured i could run and shoot pictures. basically i would run till i saw someone to shoot and then i would run/jog again. some of the photos are pretty bad but hopefully mr. ralls got some better ones.

i ended up in the top ten, so i was able to watch most of the runners come in. i think johnathan wykoff won and probably blew his handicap tonight. brian solis (ridgeview) and ryan lucker (csub) ran well and beat there previous efforts and lina (csub) blew by me like i was standing still with a half mile to go.

ridgeview had a good size group at the race and csub was well represented too. quite a few drillers made it out as well. all and all a good run.

btw the gal pictured is renee (a 2008 graduate of csub).

before the race, i spoke to jesus gomez (mcfarland class of 2008) and asked him where he was running in the fall. he said he may be at BC in the fall.

I also spoke to galvin gonzales (former mcfarland great) and he told me he is planning on running a 6 mile race in fresno on father’s day. he also said he was thinking of running his first marathon, with an eye towards running the on in fresno in november,

the race went off as planned and in the end it was galvin in first with jesus coming in 3rd. the rest of the top 9 was mcfarland’s 2007 varsity squad. followed by a mcfarland junior higher and then my son christopher.

nearly twenty runners went under 20 minutes and quite a few were younger than high school. so it looks like the mcfarland machine’s future looks bright.

the next race is june 24th. dont miss it!

chris and i went up to mcfarland to run this race. we got lucky with the weather and tried to forget how much gas cost and headed to race.

the race course is a about two miles south of the high school, west of 99. we found out that the mcfarland team runs from the school to this course as a warmup each day. we were able to spot the race because of the sea of red warming up at the entrance of the almond orchard.

coach ayon and his team warmly greeted us and told us about the course. it was basic a rectangle that ran through and around the orchards. these orchards are where the team runs daily unless it drives out of town to run in the hills.

the good thing about running in the orchards is that there is some shade and the distances are known because the fields are laid out in nice even half mile and mile intervals.

the race was a quick one and galvin won it in a sub 16 performance. at least 10 runners were under 18 minutes and my son, chris ran 18:15 for the 5k course.

hopefully more bakersfield runners will run the other races in this series this summer.

it ran through the orange orchards and was mainly downhill out and uphill coming back. interestingly there was 4 or 5 cattle fences and they were all locked so one had to climb over them.

also there were a couple more creek crossing too. the creek crossing had planks across them but often everyone ran through them.

lastly, there were cows on the course and sometimes they wouldnt move or they ran along in front of you. with cows came their cow patties too.

in the old days, a lot of runners broke 60 on the course too. on the out and back course one had to climb over 8 fences and cross the creek 6 times.

the first hill

we live downtown, a block or two from the bike path so we mainly train on the bike path where the only hils are the ones that go under the bridges.

during the off-season, christopher and i go up to the panorama bluffs and run but he hasnt run there in ages. so the kern river trail run was going to be a challenge.

for christopher, going down the trails is slower than going up them for the most part.

anyways, christopher usually wears a garmin gps watch when he runs and so i got some good elevation stats for the fifteen miler.

the race starts behind lake ming and the course is slightly downhill till the first hill at the 5.5 mile point. at this point christopher and the second place finisher in the race were in the lead with the overall winner a minute or so behind.

then the hills began and here are the elavation gains:

5.5 to 5.7 miles - 450 ft to 850 ft
5.7 to 7 miles - 850 ft to 650 ft
7 to 7.8 miles - 650 ft to 900 ft

the lead woman takes the overall lead.

7.8 to 9.1 miles - 900 ft to 600 ft
9.1 to 9.9 miles - 600 ft to 1000 ft
9.9 to 12 miles - 1000 ft to 500ft

and then it was flat to the finish. our watched measured the course at 15.13 miles.

About Cause to Run:
The program started 4 years ago in conjunction with The San Francisco Marathon™. In order to address this need, The San Francisco Marathon™ created Cause to Run. Now partnering with over 30 organizations a year, The San Francisco Marathon™ helps these organizations raise millions of dollars each year.
last year, i walked over 2000 miles in preparation for the LA marathon. my gps watch really motivated me to walk at least 40 miles a week and i even got in a couple 60 and 70 mile weeks.

on friday, my marathon really began. LAM doesnt mail you your number or let you pick it up the day of the race. you have to go to the expo at the staples center. so friday, i took my kids to scholl and headed to LA.

the traffic sucked as always but by 10am, i found a free parking space and hiked over to the expo.

i cant stand to pay for parking like george from seinfeld:

You don’t understand. A garage… I can’t even pull in there. It’s like going to a prostitute. Why should I pay, when if I apply myself, maybe I could get it for free?”
- George, looking for a parking spot, in “The Parking Spot”

i got my number and my shirt and then got out of there. by now it was 11am. so i raced over to the bicycle casino to try and pay for my trip.

i played for an hour and made $60 despite losing with trip kings, two hands in a row. i won most of money after losing with my cowboys, by playing 68 offsuit. i turned a straight and crushed the table.

then i was back on the parking lot i.e. freeway. took forever to get out LA but i made it back to town just in time for practice. now it is 5am and day two of my marathon begins.

the eb invite is all day today and by the end of the day i will be very tired.

well the eb invite was great. the drillers took home the sweepstakes trophy and won the boys varsity team award too. our girls team got second.

i got home and uploaded all the eb invite photos and videos. then went to bed at 10 pm.

at 2 am i was wide awake so i got ready, got gas and got on the road by 3 am.

too be continued …
