I am a member of the RunSFM Youth Outreach Team team.
About Cause to Run:
The program started 4 years ago in conjunction with The San Francisco Marathon™. They were approached by many small charitable organizations who wanted to organize their own running races to raise money, but the costs to organize such an event were prohibitive. In order to address this need, The San Francisco Marathon™ created Cause to Run. Now partnering with over 30 organizations a year, The San Francisco Marathon™ helps these organizations raise millions of dollars each year.
last year, i walked over 2000 miles in preparation for the LA marathon. my gps watch really motivated me to walk at least 40 miles a week and i even got in a couple 60 and 70 mile weeks.
on friday, my marathon really began. LAM doesnt mail you your number or let you pick it up the day of the race. you have to go to the expo at the staples center. so friday, i took my kids to scholl and headed to LA.
the traffic sucked as always but by 10am, i found a free parking space and hiked over to the expo.
i cant stand to pay for parking like george from seinfeld:
“You don’t understand. A garage… I can’t even pull in there. It’s like going to a prostitute. Why should I pay, when if I apply myself, maybe I could get it for free?”
- George, looking for a parking spot, in “The Parking Spot”
i got my number and my shirt and then got out of there. by now it was 11am. so i raced over to the bicycle casino to try and pay for my trip.
i played for an hour and made $60 despite losing with trip kings, two hands in a row. i won most of money after losing with my cowboys, by playing 68 offsuit. i turned a straight and crushed the table.
then i was back on the parking lot i.e. freeway. took forever to get out LA but i made it back to town just in time for practice. now it is 5am and day two of my marathon begins.
the eb invite is all day today and by the end of the day i will be very tired.
well the eb invite was great. the drillers took home the sweepstakes trophy and won the boys varsity team award too. our girls team got second.
i got home and uploaded all the eb invite photos and videos. then went to bed at 10 pm.
at 2 am i was wide awake so i got ready, got gas and got on the road by 3 am.
too be continued …

there was a big turnout for this years race and no fog. it was overcast but not too cold.

2008 5k results HERE
before the race i spoke to our road race mc peter wonderly and wanted to give him a shout out. also check out his website HERE. pete always does a good job and adds a lot to every event he works.
the race got off to a safe start and hundreds went flying by me at the choke off point at the end of the parking lot.
i walked out to around the 5k and 10 k split off point and took more photos and videos.
i waited for the runners to come by with coach boyles of csub. found out his team will be going to arizona the next couple weekends to run in indoor meets.
later, i talked to ryan lucker (5k winner) and he told me he is looking forward to running the 800 indoors and is looking to go sub 1:55.
also dont forget that csub will be hosting their open meet soon:
LEE ADAMS/CSUB OPEN TRACK AND FIELD MEET
boyles and i were at around the 2.5 mile point and the first runner to come our way was galvin with ryan close behind.
then there were a whole bunch of mcfarland runners and csub’s xc coach Maija Rohde was in front of some of mcfarland’s varsity boys. she ended up 6th overall in the 5k and ran sub 17:30 i believe. very impressive!
speaking of mcfarland, i spoke to their coach and their track invite should be a good one. it will loaded with distance relay events like the distance medley, 4 x 800 and the 4 x mile.
April 12 - McFarland Invitational (CE) will be a must see meet!
besides mcfarland, i also saw some ridgeview, east and bhs runners out there. ariey, edquist, van matre and christoper were all under 40 minutes for the 10 k and sarah baker ran in about 45 minutes. her little sister, maggie ran a quick 5 k too.
lina (5k) and erica (10k) of csub both ran good times today too.
the 5k was won by csub’s ryan lucker and Maija Rohde. the 10 k was won by mcfarland’s GALVIN GONZALEZ and pam boyles.
complete results will take awhile to be finished and i will post them when i find them.

the 2007 mr.toad’s wild run had a large field and a beautiful day for running. it is always cold in the shade before the start but by the time you make it up the pistol range hill you are warm and shedding clothing.
mcfarland runners won the 5k and the 20 k in the men’s division and csub’s coach (Maija Rohde) won the woman’s 20 k race with pam boyles in second.

herb benham description:
The 343rd annual Pie Run (even John Rous is not that distinguished) is scheduled for Thanksgiving morning at Hart Park. The pie run has been happening for close to 30 years. It’s more love your neighbor, meet-and-greet and welcome the day than it is a race.
Run or walk. Dogs are welcome (leashes are recommended unless you’re Kenny Reed and you have the world’s best-behaved dog).
Meet at Hart Park at first light (around 6 a.m.). Park. Put your pie, cookies, fruit, hot dish on the picnic tables. Walk or run a mile, six miles, whatever. Return to the park to a real wood fire, coffee, juice and good things to eat.
Bakersfield loves a potluck.

the weather was great for a race and GALVIN GONZALEZ (ex-mcfarland great) ran a really good solo effort of 1:09:39 (5:20 pace). at the valley meet and the grand masters race he has won the reserve races (low 16s) at both races and has manage to run faster than his state bound proteges.
also in the half, a couple runners who have trained with the drillers this past season ran good times. Fernando Mendoza came in 3rd in a time of 1:15:12 (5:45 pace) and Andrew Mockett got 6th place in a time of 1:22:23 (6:18 pace).
MICHAEL McCARTHY lead the drillers in a time of 1:22:52 (6:20 pace) for 7th place followed by David Van Matre 1:31:37, ANDREW EDQUIST 1:33:25, Chris Anderson 1:34:07 and Sarah Baker 1:51:07.
the women’s race was won by KRISTIN BUCKLEY in a time of 1:28:54 for 14th place overall. she was followed by PAM BOYLES (bs professor) 1:29:43 and LINA NUNEZ (csub runner) 1:30:07 .
